THE NEW NORMAL

I’d always heard that studying abroad is a life-changing journey, with students coming home profoundly changed. I can’t help but wonder exactly how living in London will change me, but I’m excited to find out.

As a communications major I chose to come here because I was fascinated with how the British language is vastly different than American English though it is technically the same language; communication is definitely not the same.

Signs that read “Way Out” caught my eye as I stepped into the Heathrow Airport. What a weird way to say “Exit” I thought. But to all the locals briskly walking around me, that was their normal.

Before arriving here I thought that I was a fast walker.

I was wrong.

No one walks faster than Londoners, walking with a sure purpose.

Wandering through Hyde Park on my first full day in this beautiful new city, amazed that such a busy city has so many miles of pure greenery, I felt a feeling of nostalgia for home. The vast plains of green grass reminded me of home and the families walking around me reminded me of mine. This city full of so many new experiences and traditions felt somehow very welcoming. My jet-lagged self felt as though I could wander around for hours.

So here’s to new adventures. New friends. New cities. New perspectives.
