An opportunity to tour Google headquarters and chat with one of their creative minds is something that should never be passed up. Walking into the giant glass building and into the futuristic lobby, it was already surpassing my wildest dreams.
We hopped in the elevator and stepped into the world of Google as shown to us by the incredible Jen Thompson. Jen is the global and sales skills training and development lead who has been with the company for over 12 years. Having grown up in Michigan and graduated from Michigan State University, she shared with us her journey with Google that brought her to London.
Jen got her start with Google fresh out of college due to some friends pushing her to try something new. Having just finished her senior year having an internship with the Michigan government, she didn’t believe that Google would have a place for her.
Throughout Jen’s talk with us, we explored many topics such as her specific day to day duties with the company and how Google is helping young entrepreneurs get their companies on their feet. One topic of discussion that I found particularly interesting was the Google interview process and what the billion dollar company looks for in a new team member.
One of the many traits they screen for is Googliness. The made-up word that perfectly describe every team member makes perfect sense; it is what the company strives to be.
Googliness deals with how one fits into the culture at Google. Being a team player, thinking about the bigger picture, and being someone who greatly values diversity.
Google is a company that has taken the world by storm and working for the company is a dream of many.
